Chemical Dependency Treatment Centers

If you or someone you know has a drug or alcohol problem, then maybe a stay at chemical dependency treatment center is needed. Many people’s lives have become totally ruined due to addictions to drugs and alcohol. The phrase “sick and tired of being sick and tired” is very true; people that seek treatment on their own advice, do so because they are completely sick and tired of the whole thing. Others simply never make it to this point. They may feel that way at times when they are at rock bottom, but soon forget once they are high again. Eventually these people may end up in chemical dependency treatment centers due to a court order, losing their job, or family intervention. Addictions are very costly to the person in many ways, personally, emotionally, physically, financially, and professionally.

There are many chemical dependency treatment centers located throughout the United States that specialize in treating addictions to drugs and/or alcohol. The focus at chemical dependency treatment centers is to teach the person how to change their way of living and move away from everything that was previously associated with drug or alcohol use. Some of the same triggers will still be there, but the focus is on learning to deal with them in a different way, a positive way that will soon become second nature. Recovery is a long process and does not just happen in one night. Chemical dependency treatment is offered in a variety of settings, including outpatient clinics, day treatment programs, acute inpatient settings, or residential facilities. There are many online sources available also, hosted by various chemical dependency treatment centers, that describe what their programs are all about. At this point, if you are checking into chemical dependency treatment centers, you know you have a problem. That is Great! You are taking a huge initial step toward recovery.

Chemical dependency treatment centers offer treatment regimens based on the needs of the patient. Some facilities are specifically for adolescents, or for adults, and some are just for women. There are even chemical dependency treatment centers that treat only certain kinds of addiction, such as to cocaine, heroine, weed or methamphetamine. Chemical dependency treatment centers offer individual, group, and family centered therapies as well that are facilitated by licensed professionals who specialize in drug and alcohol addiction. Good luck on your road to recovery; there is a new life ahead.

Cancer Treatments: Some Idea of What You go Through.

Monday, October 30th, 2006

I have been watching prime-time reruns of the HBO blockbuster, Sex in the City, and I’m reminded of the show’s brilliant finale.I love when Big flies to Paris to take his girl home as Mrs. Big, yes, but am reminded more immediately of my best friend’s cancer treatments, as this episode is one wherein Samantha has cancer and is experimenting with wigs. The writers, directors, and performers make Sam’s having cancer manageable by integrating a strain of humor into the dialogue and actions. They also make it heart-renderingly lovely by having that FOX, Smith Jarrod (played by), shave his gorgeous hair to show empathy for and solidarity with his lover. But that’s television.

Back to my best bud, who was diagnosed with invasive endometrial adinocarcinoma. While I do not wish to make money from her cancer treatments by writing about them too explicitly, and though I have been keeping a meticulously detailed diary of her cancer treatments and side-effects, I have been given leave to discuss with you cancer treatments in general, by telling you which cancer treatments she has undergone thus so far.

Almost immediately after she was diagnosed, she had a full radical hysterectomy on Valentine’s Day. This was done because the cancer was spread through her uterus, and so surgeons could investigate where the cancer was traveling. It was spreading toward the lymph nodes right under the lungs.

Next were a series of consultations with top oncologists. The options are as scary or as dreadful as having to meet a mandate to vote for a country leader and finding the only choices are Adolph Hitler or Pol Pot. Actually, worse: she would have to “elect” two/both of the two options. She would have ten weeks of radiation, five days a week for six weeks and she would take two types of chemotherapy, Sysplatin and 5FU first for four days, then weekly.

Before beginning the first of the post-surgery cancer treatments, my friend was advised to get glutamine (vitamins) and Compazine (an anti-nausea potion)…to combat the Amaphostine shot. Besides having the run-around by pharmacies, she had no trouble before or after the first round (over four days, during the Academy Awards week).

Next in the series of cancer treatments was another consultation. The specialist informed her she would have internal radiation. A tampon as lethal to her as to the cancer that would be inserted and would require she lie on her back with her feet up for three hours afterward.

For the first days, my best friend was feeling fine. When we spoke by phone (as I am a long drive away and cannot be there every day), she was still clear, attentive, and laughing. After two weeks, she was sick. She had terrible bathroom problems and couldn’t even stay on the phone to talk or listen—though this woman is a phone freak, using the phone 99% of the time, over using email.

Thus far, then, through her prepost and interim cancer treatments, all I can do is find hysterical sayings to send her or save to read to her over the phone when she feels better. And she will, for she is a stalwort survivor with one of the finest senses of humor around. And THAT, is purportedly the BEST of cancer treatments…. laughing.

Cancer Treatment Centers

If you have been diagnosed with cancer, there are a vast amount of cancer treatment centers located throughout the country. Many of these cancer treatment centers offer a variety of treatments, both traditional and holistic, to treat not only the cancer, but the body, mind, and spirit as well. Various cancer treatment centers conduct research on an ongoing basis, and patients can participate if they qualify in a number of clinical trials. New cancer treatments are being developed all the time, and once research has progressed to where trying it on humans is warranted, clinical trials are done. Great results are being seen with new cancer treatments; some types of cancer that were an automatic death sentence in the past are now being treated successfully, and patients are living cancer free due to this continued research.

There are cancer treatment centers that are accessible to everyone located in most metropolitan areas. Most are have to do with with large university based hospitals, and offer the latest technology available to treat various types of cancers. These types of facilities are also research based and provide a number of new treatment options to participants in various ongoing studies. If one of these larger cancer treatment centers is not within a reasonable distance, or not accessible due to other limitations, treatment can be sought through local oncologists and cancer treatment centers. These are also great facilities, and can provide the cancer patient with professional care and support. Cancer treatment centers differ in the types of services they offer, whether they are traditional or alternative treatment based, and the corresponding fees differ as well. It’s very possible to find an affordable cancer treatment center, and if you want extra amenities and a more non-traditional approach, that is available too. Some of the more upscale private facilities provide the gourmet organic meals, natural herbal spa treatments, and other pampering services to the cancer patient, in addition to deluxe room accommodations. These non-traditional cancer therapies help the patient recover and enjoy living again.

Cancer treatment centers don’t have to be sterile hospital environments, with stale food, and stiff sheets. Comfort is also important for all cancer patients, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Cancer patients searching for a cancer treatment center can look online at a number of options, where various cancer treatments are discussed, as well as other considerations such as diet and nutrition, and spiritual health. Cancer treatment centers all have the same goal, to provide the best care possible, to offer endless support to cancer patients and their families, and turn what can be a devastating situation into a positive and great experience.

Cancer Information

If you are looking for reliable cancer information, you need to look no further then the internet. There are a vast amount of sites that offer information on breast cancer, skin cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, as well as other types of cancer, including signs and symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, and prognosis. The American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org has an great amount of cancer information and links of interest that can help you to other cancer information resources. There are detailed guides about different kinds of cancer, treatment options, various cancer drugs, and how to get involved in groups promoting cancer awareness and education. You can make donations by purchasing books and other materials that have to do with cancer information from the website as well.

Another good source for news about ongoing research and up to date cancer information is the National Institute of Health’s cancer research group, located online at www.cancer.gov. This is a great site where you can locate cancer statistics, such as the prevalence of various forms of cancer, as well as information regarding ongoing clinical trials, results of previous research, how clinical trials are done, and how to locate a clinical trial to participate in. This site also has an extensive online dictionary with definitions for various cancer terms and treatments, also to add on to an in depth section on medications used in cancer treatments as well as links to more cancer drug information. Other reputable sites worth a visit are www.oncolink.com sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center, www.cancersociety.com, and the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service at www.cis.nci.nih.gov.

If you are looking for cancer information from more personal sources, say from real (normal) people who have cancer, then you may want to join an online chat forum or local cancer support group. A few people have even posted their experiences and thoughts on their own personal websites, and you can visit with these folks via email as well. You may just have something in common, and this could be a great way to learn more about your situation and what to expect and do. Other good sources of cancer information include your primary care physician or gynecologist for various types of female concerns, including breast, cervical, ovarian, and uterine cancers. If you are looking for cancer information on a certain type, you can do a search just on that alone, which will narrow down your results considerably. Hopefully, you or your loved ones will never have to hear the diagnosis of cancer, but if you do, you know that cancer information is easily accessed. Knowledge is power, get it, and use it.

Buy Health Insurance-Protect Your Loved Ones from Harm.

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

There are presently 45 million people in America that do not have health insurance. Are you one of them? There are many reasons why people do not buy health insurance. The number one reason and most obvious is the how much it could cost. However the cost to you and your family if you do not have insurance and are struck down with a major illness may mean complete bankruptcy. Another leading reason why people don’t buy health insurance is when they switch companies and have a pre-existing condition. Most often a new company will not insure a person that has been diagnosed with a disease or chronic condition because they are thought of as a high use risk. Although companies want you to buy health insurance they do not necessarily want you to use it. There are many alternative programs in most States in the United States that offer plans to people that have been rejected insurance due to a pre-existing condition. These are not always well publicized but certainly worth looking into if you or a member of your family fits into this category, and not an option to overlook as you buy health insurance.

There are many companies and options to buy health insurance. Most of the major companies offer a free on line quote. Many of these companies also offer to provide comparisons for numorous plans within the company and also will compare the price of similar plans to their major competitors. The comparisons usually look at the type of deductible you are willing to pay as well as co-pays. A major change in price from one plan to the next is whether or not prescription medications are covered or offered at a reduced rate with co-pay. Prescription coverage may not be necessary when you buy health insurance if you or your family members are not prescribed with daily medication. The elderly that are more likely to have prescribed medications, have Medicare options to cover this area, so this is not as important of an issue for them when buying supplemental health insurance to pick up where Medicare finishes. If you decide to have a price quote done it’s important that you fill out what state you settle in when filling out the information for United States Citizens because at this time you can only buy health insurance from providers from the State you reside in. There is a bill in legislation at this point in time trying to amend this policy; however there is not a great deal of support for it. The state of Massachusetts is trying to pass a law that it be mandatory for all residents of that state to buy health insurance or face penalties, similar to the mandatory laws to have car insurance. The main debate with this kind of legislation is what is affordable to one household is not affordable to another.

The situation of millions of Americans that don’t have health insurance is costing tax payers millions of dollars annually. Individuals and families need to be protected so buy health insurance. If each person does buy health insurance the over all costs for everyone will decrease, because those with insurance do not have to pay high cost for premiums to pay for the costs of those that don’t have health care coverage.

A Note About Adult Diapers

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

Most people do fear growing old. It’s difficult to face old age when medical conditions affect you ability to function. Bladder control and bowel control problems plague many of our older citizens who have few other health issues to face. They also plague those who do. Adult diapers are a welcomed solution to the dilemma. However it is difficult to find a company who values the person’s privacy as well.

Not everyone who requires the use of adult diapers is suffering from dementia or other mental conditions associated with aging that make the individual unaware of the events that are taking place around him. Family members may also wish to keep their loved one’s condition private for any number of reasons.

Many people are not bothered by what other people think. They will proudly walk into any store and buy adult diapers without a second thought. This is admirable, but it is not always the normal situation among our vain population. Many of us would much prefer that our adult diapers be sent to our homes in a discreet manner.

Discreet is the operative word in this case. The very last thing that I want to find sitting on my front porch is a huge box that has Adult Diapers written across the package in big, bold letters. It may seem a tad picky, but I do like my privacy, and that just isn’t the place for those companies to advertise. Having bladder or bowel control problems is difficult enough without worrying about what the neighbors think. I like to take my afternoon walks in stride.

I finally discovered a company which will deliver adult diapers right to my door in a DISCREET manner. The packaging is understated and there is no mention of the actual contents of the package and this is very much appreciated by many customers. It’s also appreciated by many of the customers’ loved ones who don’t want their grandfather to be remembered as the adult diaper guy on the block.

There are two varieties of adult diapers offered by this thoughtful company. Both are disposable but the first resembles a baby diaper and is mostly used for more severe cases. The second is a pull up that functions like a regular undergarment. The latter is preferred for adult diapers by many high-functioning elderly citizens who want to maintain their independence as well as their dignity.

Caring for an aging loved one is the greatest gift you can provide for them. Your compassion and time are so very valuable to your elderly relative. A small thing like discretion when it comes to issues like adult diapers will prove your thoughtfulness, as well as your love.

What Do You Know About Acid Reflux Disease?

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

Acid reflux disease, also commonly referred to as ’heart burn’, is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach regurgitates into the esophagus. This is both annoying and painful.  But you want to know the truth, surprisingly the reflux of the stomach’s liquid contents into the esophagus occurs in most normal individuals. However, when heartburn becomes acid reflux disease or Gastro esophageal reflux disease, commonly referred to as GERD, it is s real problem.  That is because with GERD, the acid is stronger and stays in the esophagus longer causing more discomfort.

Usually, you will experience this during the daytime when you are upright, sitting straight, or standing. Your body handles this reflux by the fluid flowing back down into your stomach. So you swallow more during the daytime, therefore draining the acid back to where it belongs.  Your salivary glands produce saliva that also contains bicarbonate which acts to neutralize the acid your stomach has kicked up.

At night however, you may have a greater problem when acid reflux disease occurs. This is due to the fact that while sleeping, gravity does not work as well lying down, your constant swallowing stops, and the production of saliva is reduced.

Certain conditions cause a person to be more prone to acid reflux disease, this GERD.  For example, while you are pregnant, this can be a serious problem.  Higher hormone levels of pregnancy probably cause reflux by lowering the pressure in that part of your body known as the lower esophageal sphincter.  Also, the growing baby puts more pressure on the abdomen.  Both of these effects of pregnancy tend to increase the risk of GERD.

If your acid reflux disease is a smaller condition, then you should only experience minor symptoms.  These include primarily heartburn, regurgitation, and nausea.  However, if the condition is complicated, then watch out for the following symptoms:

The liquid which comes back into the esophagus damages the lining of the esophagus.  The body attempts to protect itself from the acid reflux disease by ‘inflaming’ the esophagus.  Trying to speed the healing process through the inflammation, the wall of the esophagus may form an ulcer.  The ulcer is a break in the lining of the esophagus wall.  After that there may be bleeding.  If the bleeding is very severe, patients might need a blood transfusion or even surgical treatment.

If your heartburn is severe or acute, happening very frequently, you should to see a doctor.

What can you do for yourself to help the condition?  Try sleeping on a pillow at night which raises your chest up slightly so that gravity can bring the acid back down more easily.  Since this condition usually occurs on a full stomach, eat earlier and eat less to keep the stomach from being too full.  Ease off on the chocolate, peppermint, alcohol, and caffeinated drinks.  Reduce fatty foods and, of course, cut down on ,or quit, smoking.  Other foods may aggravate the conditions.  Avoid spicy or acid-containing foods, like citrus juices, carbonated beverages, and tomato juice.

Asthma Treatments: The Facts.

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

Asthma treatments come in a lot of different shapes and forms. People who suffer from the breathing disorder have quite a few options to think about. Physicians can prescribe a number of medications that prove to be successful in relieving the symptoms associated with the frightening affliction. However, the options are void when the person looking for treatment is pregnant.

One of the most exciting times in a woman’s life is when she is having a baby. The mother goes through a lot of emotional and physical changes during this period in her life. Some of the physical changes are unexpected and uncomfortable. A woman can find herself sleepless, irritable and nauseous.

Having breathing problems on top of all of the other symptoms of pregnancy can really be a problem. Finding appropriate asthma treatments that can be administered during pregnancy can put the woman’s mind at ease. However, finding asthma treatments is not always so easy especially if you are pregnant.

Asthma is quite common in the United States and other countries around the world. Anyone who has suffered an asthma attack knows the symptoms. An exacerbation, or attack, involves coughing wheezing and the scary feeling of being unable to get any air. Some describe an exacerbation as drowning in air. Asthma treatments are developed to alleviate the symptoms associated with the attack.

Unfortunately, the developing baby in the womb takes in air through his mother’s breathing. If the mother isn’t getting any air, neither is the fetus. The baby is dependant on the mother’s breathing to get the appropriate supply of oxygen he needs to survive. When a woman has an exacerbation, the baby is at risk for not getting enough oxygen. This can be very dangerous to the developing fetus.

Many women who used asthma treatments that involved medication before they became pregnant often cease the asthma treatments. Women with the breathing disorder are afraid that the medicine will have an adverse effect on the baby. However, it is best to meet with a physician before quitting the medication completely.

Your doctor needs to know the full details about your condition and he needs to know if you choose to quit asthma treatments. You could be putting the baby at greater risk by quitting the medication because a severe attack will do more harm to the fetus than the medicine can. The more severe the exacerbation, the more harmful it could be for the baby. Abruptly stopping asthma treatments can do more harm than good.
